Course Description

Learn and practice an evidence-based approach to manage stress. Regain energy. Learn and practice strategies to lead a more grounded and less stressful life.
 

In the Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction course, you will practice guided meditations and cognitive exercises including:

  • Still meditations like the body scan, and awareness of breath, body, sounds, thoughts and emotions
  • Movement meditations like gentle yoga, qigong and walking meditation
  • Recognizing and managing stress reactions
     

Home practice and in class participation will lead to optimal benefits in this experiential course.

This is an 8-week online course that offers guided mindfulness practices to help participants reconnect with the present moment and manage stress.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this course, students will:

  • become familiar with guided meditation practices including
    • body scan meditation
    • sitting meditation with mindfulness of breath, body sensations, emotions, behaviours, and thoughts
    • mindful movement
    • walking meditation.
  • become aware of personal stress reactivity and resilience
  • develop a plan for home practice.

Course Content

Topics covered include:

  • principles of mindfulness
  • meditation practices
  • the benefits of meditation
  • stress reactivity and resilience
  • practical application of mindfulness in daily living
Learning ResourcesParticipants are advised to have a yoga or exercise mat for class and to wear comfortable clothing.
Instruction MethodAlthough the majority of the course will take place online, this course is highly experiential. Students are encouraged to participate in class discussions. Working webcams and microphones are imperative and must remain on for the duration of the class.

An in-person, 7-hour retreat will take place at our New Westminster campus (see Class Dates below).
AssignmentsHome practice optimizes the benefits of mindfulness practice.
GradingThis course is assessed on a Mastery/Non-mastery basis. Attendance and participation is required.

Course InstructorTom Heah (he/him) has taught Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) since 2006. He is a trainer and mentor for MBSR teachers-in-training at the Centre for Mindfulness Studies in Toronto. He works as an occupational therapist in mental health with Vancouver Coastal Health. He is certified to teach Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction and Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy through the UCSD Center for Mindfulness and is a Certified Mindfulness Facilitator through the UCLA Mindful Awareness Research Center. Tom has a M.Sc. in Occupational Therapy and is a Registered Occupational Therapist in BC.
