Course Description

The course will provide an introductory and preparatory framework for those who are or will be called to care for seniors. Learners will include spouses, adult children, friends and relatives of aging adults as well as paid caregivers and senior service organizations.

Pre-requisites

There are no formal prerequisites for this course, but completion of English 12 with a minimum grade of “C” or proof of equivalent as outlined in detail on the English Proficiency page is assumed.

Students who register are understood to be confirming successful completion of this expectation.

Course Content

Modules are self paced and online and include the following seniors' care topics:

  • medical terms and conditions
  • healthcare systems
  • personal care and equipment
  • financial and legal considerations
  • housing and advocacy
  • caregiver wellness and supports
Learning ResourcesCourse manual will be provided.
Instruction MethodA Ƶ instructor will guide and support students through optional bi-weekly Zoom sessions and discussion boards. 
Instructor
Mary has a strategic communications and community development background, including a Master’s Degree in Community Development. Her experience includes program development and engagement in the education, arts & culture, and social service sectors. Over the past several years, she was a caregiver for her mother then godmother on the Sunshine Coast and experienced first-hand the struggles of navigating the seniors’ health care system. She is currently the Executive Director of the Sunshine Coast Resource Centre.
